Biophest Festival brings together biophilia (our innate love of nature), thinking and artistic practices. The term biophilia was coined by Erich Fromm in 1973—and developed by Wilson in his book Biophilia (1984)—as a mode of envisioning a fairer and more interconnected life between humans and non-human life forms such as plants. In recent years, the term has come under study and speculation in the field of contemporary culture, and this festival will shed some light on the subject.

Curated by Eva F. Cortés and Elena Páez, Biophest Festival will be held from 4 to 6 April 2025 and will include concerts (curated by Diego Fernández), workshops, talks and installations in different venues at Matadero Madrid. It will feature the participation of internationally renowned botanists, thinkers, landscapers and designers as well as visual, musical and performing artists. The festival will also feature local agents who will showcase to the public, through guided tours and other initiatives, the diversity of the natural environments around Matadero Madrid.

Organised by Matadero Madrid, the centre for contemporary creation run by Madrid City Council's Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport, Biophest is sponsored by Águas Das PedrasEl Águila and the Association for Forest Certification in Spain (PEFC Spain), and curated by Elena Páez and Eva F. Cortés.

Biophest Festival falls within the line of work centred on permaculture and critical ecology which, among others, has been a key focus of Intermediae’s programme since the beginning.
